As with most disasters, the worst time to prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse is after it has begun. Fortunately for our readers, The Danger Geeks have documented their first line of defense… The Flamethrower v1.
When considering the possibility of a Zombie outbreak, we outlined three core rules for the project:

It must be built with items one may reasonably find within their home.

It must be capable of being assembled quickly.

The pressure to propel the fuel source must be maintained without the need of an external power source (e.g., no air compressors, electric propulsion, etc.)

Flamethrower construction inventory:

Backpack sprayer (originally designed for spraying weed killer/pesticides)

An assortment of metal pipes and adapters

Teflon tape

Duct tape (of course)

A lighter with a flexible neck

Denatured alcohol

The build process took around 30 minutes. During this time we were able to assemble the sprayer, the wand, perform pressure and leak tests – all while streaming the process live to the internet using a webcam attached to a netbook.

Construction overview: The following is an overview of the Flamethrower v1 build process. There were a few instances of troubleshooting during the pressure and leak tests that we’ll condense, but all the important details will remain. (Our legal department has adviced us not to list our build process. If you would like more details please feel free to contact us)

The worlds of comics, movies and television are realms whose inhabitants are often in peril. From villains to henchmen, petty criminals and the merely desperate, making a trip to the corner store may be the gateway to the undoing of mere mortals such as you and I. Hell, the risks one faces make you wonder how anyone ever gets anything accomplished.

Fortunately these are also the realms of superheroes and others who take up the gauntlet against evildoers. Men, women and even otherworldly beings take flight to combat the dangers and injustices inflicted upon the everyday citizen.

The Wizard World Comic-Con in Chicago was a gathering that showcased an incredible number of artists and entertainers this year, allowing fans to spend some time with the individuals who bring to life the precarious balance of good and evil. Vendors featured countless action figures, comics, weapon replicas, posters and, a first for the Chicago Con, a tattoo booth. With so much going on, one could flex with The Hulk (Lou Ferrigno), get Lando’s (Billy Dee Williams) autograph, then go chat with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), and that’s just one small part of a single day in the three-day event.

The convention even featured a costume contest, allowing attendees to become part of the show themselves. Storm Troopers patrolled the convention hall’s floor searching for droids, while Cloud, holding his Buster Sword safely above the heads of the crowd, strolled through the milling masses (possibly hunting for a Chocobo to ride back to his hotel). The quality of the costumes ranged from minor accessories (a Spiderman mask that looked like it came from a child’s Halloween costume) to elaborate recreations consisting of more leather, metal and spandex than most people are likely see in a lifetime. When the mighty encountered one another on the floor, heroes would flex, cameras would flash and the crowd would move on – a cycle that repeated itself for hours on end.

"Red Arrow"(Nashanta Robinson), "Hal Jordan/Green Lantern"(Joe Rorabaugh), "Black Canary"(Brittnie Mason), "Hawk Girl"(Jessie Fletcher), "Robin"(Darin Williams), "(Smallville) Aquaman"(W.

For what may be considered a niche group drawn from all walks of life, the turnout was impressive. April Wiggins of Wizard World noted that they aren’t permitted to release the official attendance numbers, but typical attendance is around 70,000 people – and this year’s ticket sales were up from last year. Several hundred artists were registered (complete list available here, and over 300 representatives of the media. After several hours amongst the sea of people on the convention floor, one might not encounter the same person twice.

The crowd watches on as the costume contest proceeds. -photo by Halbert Walston

With much so much to see and so much to do, it was an exhausting ride for all involved. The Danger Geeks, beyond working the floor, sat in on some of the featured interview panels (check back for an upcoming Q&A session with Hayden Black on the upcoming Cabonauts webisodes) and even scored an interview with actor Michael Papajohn (video available here).

Whether fans of sci-fi, comics, adventure, or all of the above, there was bound something for everyone. For those interested in attending a Wizard World Comic-Con for yourself, you can find more information regarding dates and locations at http://www.wizardworld.com.
